Aside from joking about how "Pizza Hut supports the rebellion" I can pretty easily ignore the generic pizza logo in Code Geass. Tiger and Bunny, though... a blank spot completely misses the point. I'm sure it was quicker to digitally remove it than try to add something and have it look decent, but it looks wrong. Even more so when Tiger's first costume was more "traditional" and then he ends up having to sign on with a new company with more sponsors because they weren't getting enough ad revenue to keep him employed.

I was always amused by the scene in Toradora where Ryuji is sitting in "Sudohbucks" and wondering why that place had not been sued.
Lots of off-brand Starbucks in anime, I think! |

This Nekojiru Udon panel has permanently altered my perception of Johnathan's. |

I'm glad that the two Costaco references were noted. That was a new one on me when I saw those. Actually, what I find really freaky is when a real brand shows up in a show in what is clearly paid for advertising. It doesn't happen often but I chuckle every time I see the Subaru name and logo show up on one of the coffin transports in Synduality: Noir.

I love that one because it implies that Starbucks does actually exist in universe and even the characters know that their regular coffee place is just an off-brand Starbucks. |

That one Umaru-chan Burger Clown was legitimately creepy though.

FUN FACT: MF Ghost had both a Denny's and a Jonathan's, and both had unaltered names! I'm gonna guess that was a perk that came with using real-life manufacturer logos on all the cars.

As a Southerner, I am always perplexed when people get weirded out about Waffle House. Maybe it's a generational thing (I'm 60) or maybe it's a social media era thing... But, like, there was no judgement back then. It was just where we went at 2AM for coffee and breakfast.
Unless we were close to the Krispy Kreme. Those ol' ladies who worked the midshift at Krispy Kreme didn't bat an eyelash at anything. Even the store being suddenly flooded with a bunch of teens and twentysomethings still in Rocky Horror cosplay. |

On the topic of popular musicians making commercial MVs you got to mention Eve's Heart Forcast MV for Lotte chocolate.

If you take the Keisei Skyliner to/from Narita Airport, you pass by a Costco (at least I assume it's still there).
I also bore witness to the Gendou shaver campaign when visiting Harajuku. It was quite a sight to behold. |

One odd experience I've had in this matter was watching Rise of the Nura Clan (I'm pretty sure it was), and the character eating a "Snackers" candy bar. And then not long afterward, watching Nichijou, and Hakase randomly shouting "Feeling hungry? Have a Snickers!" I'm always a little blindsided when an actual brand is used.
Similarly, I recall reading a volume of Oregairu, and feeling like I was losing my mind when Hachiman spent about an entire page talking about McDonalds. Not WcDonalds, or some other made-up name. Just actual McDonalds. |

As I'm not from the US, I never thought Denny's had that kind of rep. It landed on our shores a few years back and it was advertised as some high-tier casual restaurant. Tried the food myself (on somebody else's dime, admittedly) and it was ridiculously priced for what is essentially stuff you can cook yourself --and likely do a better job of it-- at home.
I guess their target market are expats who are nostalgic for the flavor and wouldn't balk at $8-10 meals in a country where $10 is minimum wage (a day)... Still surprising to me that it's somehow apparently on a comparable level as fast food (or worse?) taste wise. |

I wonder if your country's Denny's is better than ours. I know McDonalds in other countries tends to actually have better quality food than America, especially Japan's. The only reason I ever went to Denny's was when they had 4.99 dollar Grand Slams back in the day. I think they're like 8 bucks now, and you get less food. |

Lotte is really out there singlehandedly supporting the music and animation industries....
I went to a Denny's in Japan once (I had only recently arrive, was waiting for a shop to open, it was early morning and raining). I didn't know it was an American thing until later, and I still don't really know much about it. I think the price was okay but I forget. All I remember is I got omurice and it had chicken in it (I'm a vegetarian..) |
