I am about 150 hours into Xenoblade 3 and still haven't finished, though I'm probably in the final area. I say probably because Xenoblade 2 didn't know when to end, so curveballs are expected. I'm not allowing myself to play any more RPG Time until I finish, so that should motivate me to keep up momentum until the end.
Quote: | RPG Maker might be the face of a horde of asset-flipped shovelware that inundates Steam's library, but I have nothing but piles of respect for the game. As a highschooler, I put countless hours into making my own RPG in RPG Maker 2000. The result was a thing I bonded over with my best friends in highschool; it also helped them kickstart their dreams of pursuing art and game design. Really fond memories overall. |
95, 2000, 2003, XP, VX, VXAce, MV, MZ. Never actually had the self-confidence to release anything (besides a few noteworthy plugins), but the experience has been useful in my full-time job, so it certainly wasn't a waste of time.
I'm personally hyped for Unite because I (finally) get to put my 3D graphics skills to proper use. If I'm reading the specs right, I should be able to put together a 3D-on-2D RPG in the veins of late-90s Final Fantasy (and FANTASIAN) with just a little C# tweaking. That's banking on Ojima still handling the programing, and still writing beautiful, readable (and easily modifiable) code of the highest quality, but I think that's a safe bet.

I am catching one and naming it Omega. You can't stop me.

I'm curious where you heard Omodaka was Indian? I haven't read anything pointing to that. I assume she's Japanese like most other Pokemon characters barring some explicitly stated characters like Matis and Melissa.who are American.

"Most Tales Of... fans swear by Symphonia or Vesperia, for example"? Abyss is the most played game in the series, 3 of its villains were in the top 10 villains list, and Luke was the top rated character on the anniversary poll. Hell, the most emotional moments poll was topped by Rebirth.
Don't see the reason to even make this comparison, it's completely unnecessary when what you're talking about Atelier. It doesn't add to a celebration of Atelier, it just leads people to talk about how wrong your generalizations are.

If you don’t mind a tired played out 8 bit aesthetic that the developers refuse to stop using even when the earlier games were willing to switch things up.

Oh boy if Nintendo screws this up if it ever gets announced.

Oh, you're using her Japanese name. Well, in English, her name is localized as Geeta. It's a good play on 'Sagittarius", like Omodaka, but it's also Sanskrit for "song". Given that her features read as South-Asian, I'm taking that as Desi rep.
I had to Google who Matis and Melissa are, because those aren't their names in the US. Matis is Hugh, and Melissa is "Fantina"--and in the US versions, Fantina is localized as being French, even using random French in her dialogue. The Pokémon games have given up the ghost on trying to incorporate real world geography, but stand-ins still exist. Unova is still a mix of New York and New Jersey, Kallos is still non-specific continental Europe (with "Kallos" being Greek for "beauty"), Galar is the United Kingdom, and Alola being somewhere in the South Pacific (or Hawai'i). Paldea being based off of Spain is pretty much text; the starters all have names that are Spanish puns ("Spri-gatito", for "little kitten", Fuecoco has "fuego" which is Fire). Even "Paldea" has its roots in Spanish, containing the word "aldea" ("village").
It's not outside the realm of possibility for characters of color in Pokémon to have been made with the intent of representing IRL ethnicities, when you factor in that both specific regions are made to represent IRL places in the world that aren't just Japan and America and even individual characters have very clear POC designs. There's precedent for that being done in the English localizations of the games, no reason to assume its not the case with Geeta.

Eesh, dude, why so snippy? One of my close friends in Puerto Rico loves Abyss, but I don't stay up to date on popularity polls. Go take a walk, catch a breath, and then go relax. It's nothing to get yourself all up in a huff over.

Atelier is a series I really need to get into more, I played Rorona and loved it but I got way too burnt out playing it and then starting up a NG+ before it crashed and lost my progress.
Maybe Scarlet Violet will get me back into Pokemon, but I'll probably just wait for reviews first. I haven't played a new mainline game since Y

I'll admit that it took a minute for me to get the joke, but now that I see it, that's a fun naming convention for a video game.
For the non-programming people in the audience:
void* tRrLM2() is written the same way a programming function--that is, an instruction to a program to do something--is written, with a void function being a real type of function. The "//Void Terrarium 2" part after it is where comments about the program should go when writing code.
So "void* tRrLM2() //Void Terranium 2" is spelling "Void Terrarium 2" minus the vowels (and with one 'L' instead of an 'r') in the format of a function name and has a helpful comment basically saying "This is Void Terranium 2" next to it as an explanation.
It absolutely feels like the kind of video game name a developer would come up with.
Re: Pokemon, I haven't been keeping up on Scarlet and Violet news, but I'm thrilled to hear about the Let's Go feature. There's something really special about being able to walk around a Pokemon world side-by-side with your favorite buddy.

I think you'd like Ryza a lot. It's kind of a different flavor from the others I've played, but the result is a very chill, low-pressure twist on the formula. The "endless summer" vibe is fantastic. It's not awful on Switch, but if you have something with a bit more graphical power, the environments are worth it.
I never got around to Ryza 2, but if there's a third one in the works I may need to work on that.

I think Sword and Shield are worth playing for the story, even if they did really drop the ball with the Wild Area. (The problem not so much being that it existed, but that you're introduced to it very early before being sent back to standard fixed-camera areas for the rest of the game.) Sun and Moon... have Lycanroc?
