It's worth emphasizing that not every anime convention is 20 million people deep, and I feel like it'd be better for the ecosystem if even more shows were smaller and community-focused rather than serving as non-seasonal spring break to a stadium-sized crowd.

When she was still a teenager, one of my daughters went with us to AX. She decided to cosplay as the lead from the Girl Who Leapt through Time since she was a huge fan of the movie. Pretty low-key costume that didn't look horribly out of place at AX even if you didn't know the movie.
She was so excited when we saw a poster for the movie and then some random strangers saw the poster and her standing right next to it and asked to take photos of her posing. |

I went to AB and cosplayed from The Idolmaster SideM for the second time. Someone knew the show and took my picture. I was so happy but it also just as enjoyable to be on the other side. Someone was dressed up as Tomo from Tomo-chan is a Girl and we discussed the show for a good 10 minutes.
As a younger con goer with funds you want to stay up as late as possible and have fun but as an adult it's nice to have a nightcap or two and hit the hay for an early start. |

The nearest thing I've been to a convention lately was the 2023 M3 doujin CD fair in Tokyo.
The catalogue was also online which made searching easier than going through the paper catalogue looking for names that had interest. Besides legends like Eiko Shimamiya and Kanako Ito in person, there were also people who may have never appeared on a big stage, yet were passionate about their music. Some of the artists from M3 this year appeared the same night at a live show called Otolatte Live. I admired their stamina. Neither show was too crowded, and it was great to be able to respectfully get to meet artists and have merchandise autographed. |
