The hero characters in Xenoblade 3 were quite well done. While I certainly had my favorites, both mechanically and personality wise, I think there were only 2 that I actively disliked. Honestly quite impressive, given the number of them.
Sin's back in GG, and I think he's a lot of fun to play. There's some oddities to his kit, but he seems a good addition to me. Not good enough to drop my main, but a fun secondary. Always nice to have a pocket gorilla. Also, the game gets a major patch this month, so it may shake up things online/in tourney.
And..oh ye gods and little fishies, Record of Agarest War. I played it on release, and it definitely defines Compile Hearts strengths and flaws. Very interesting premise and setups....marred by poor execution and jank. It tries a lot, mostly fails, but I can't help but respect the attempt.

I know he brought up how this reveal would happen after his due date, but Jean-Karlo's going to have to get used to absolute-last-minute updates, like Heidi sometimes did, because this entire section unfortunately became outdated before publication. All Code Mystics wound up teasing was the announcement of a closed beta test for the addition of a online Spectator Mode for Arcade1Up's Killer Instinct home arcade cabinet... That's all.
I remember Heidi often getting annoyed at how the games industry would often time reveals to occur just before the new TWiG would come out (especially if said reveal wound up being underwhelming), so now Jean-Karlo will learn to feel that same annoyance, I'm sure.

We have yet to hear Pratt speak a full sentence as Mario so it's still too early to judge. But what little he says in the new trailer sounds like Mario.
The casting of Miyano in the Japanese dub is not much different from Pratt's, as Miyano is also young, sexy, and very popular.

I've seen videos from Pokémon SV and while some bugs there are notable, the only real problem seems to be the frame rate. My friends who are playing it have complained about this but otherwise everyone seems to enjoy the game so... Meh? Bugs and glitches, unless game breaking, never seemed that important to me. If there's one thing that made me not want to play this game is the fact that I can't gjve my character any cute skirts and the uniform for the game absolutely sucks.

I can't speak to Heidi's situation, but in my case I work a regular 8-5 outside of my ANN duties (not counting transit), and working from home is simply not an option for me. I very well can't go to my manager and tell them, "Yeah, I'm sorry I'm always late to the office and passing out at my desk, I needed to make sure I was as absolutely up-to-date on the latest Killer Instinct news". I can't update my column from work, either.
I've been able to swing things by for big stuff like the Nintendo Directs that get scheduled at 5 am (my time) on weekdays, but understandably this isn't something I can really do for every last news article. Would that I could hang on the Killer Instinct timer until the last second to update folks on what the reveal was, but I can't. If we get a reveal at the absolute buttcrack of dawn on Friday.
In my situation, I gotta pick my battles, and the KI reveal was one where I made the call. I'm not one to make excuses, so I apologize for leaving you hanging on KI, but that's just the reality of my situation.

Completely understandable. It's just a shame that Code Mystics didn't seem to consider that making a countdown clock for anything KI-related would make fans go crazy with speculation. They really should have just announced it without any teasing.

Not if Nintendo has been offering refunds.

If the games are free of game crashing bugs and choppy framerates “Hello Fallout 4” or don’t look ass like New Vegas.
I say bring them on.

Ioved that comic in Nintendo Power! I anticipated getting every issue to see hiw it and the Zelda comic panned out.
For the naysayers still complaining about the upcoming movie, please remember that even Sony had to release the Emoji Movie before giving us Into the Spiderverse. So maybe Illumination will pull their own 180° after the recent Minions flick.

The Minions moive that grossed $1,159,398,397 worldwide? How is that bad in any which way that there needs to be a 180 on? You're really comparable that to the Emoji Movie? Or Spider-Verse? Both of which only made a fraction of that amount?
This is Mario so it'll no doubt do well, but people can still complain about the stuff we've seen so far. It's okay to be critical of things, especially annoying things like the changes to Peach and stuff which have unfortunate roots in sexism.

Emoji movie which was not based off a video game and was not among their worst performing animated movies is your bar?

They're games. You fight in them with either melee weapons or just your hands and feet. What limits are you imposing on a game to allow it to be featured in the "fighting games" category? (Which is a pretty broad term to begin with, much like "shooter".)

So, by this logic, then the newest Call of Duty game should also be up for "Best Shooter" when all of its competition are horizontal & vertical shoot-em-ups? Quite honestly, no one would argue for that, because it's absurd logic. Yes, first-person shooters are "shooters", but they aren't the same exact kind of game as shoot-em-ups, so naturally you'd make separate categories to differentiate between them.
It's the same between fighting game & brawlers/beat-em-ups (you can also include hack-&-slashers for the latter). Sure, fighting games can technically be argued as having come from side-scrolling brawlers back in the 80s, and there are some people who still call fighting games "brawlers", but they definitely aren't the same exact kind of game. Sifu is a brawler, as the focus isn't on round-based combat like it is in fighting games, and you wouldn't necessarily want to play Sifu because you're looking for a similar experience as KOF XV. Really, The Game Awards could have easily made a "Best Brawler" category this year to include Sifu in, because there was good competition in that genre this year, like TMNT: Shredder's Revenge & Final Vendetta, and you can even extend it out to games like God of War: Ragnarok, which is definitely in the vein of a good-old hack-&-slash title.
Really, the biggest problem is that TGA doesn't actually like to use "Best [Inset Genre Here]", except for RPGs, fighting games, Sim/Strategy games, & Driving/Racing games. Beyond those, the only other "genre" categories are "Action" & "Action/Adventure", which is honestly a bit absurd & very limiting. To not have categories like "Best FPS", "Best Adventure Game" (as in point-&-click, "walking simulator", etc.), "Best Third-Person Shooter", "Best Brawler", "Best Arcade-Style Game", etc. really shows how limiting The Game Awards truly are, personally.

My own views towards the Mario movie haven't changed much at all recently. Chris Pratt as Mario is still not selling it for me. In fact, it gives off the impression that Illumination is too scared to show off Pratt's acting chops in the role. That is a big red flag which could affect the reputation of the movie as a whole unless kids don't ultimately care how Mario is voiced in the end. Charlie Day is okay as Luigi and no, I DON'T care about his work as Pepe Silvia. This is NOT It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This is a matter of whether his baseline acting works for the character of Luigi, not whether kids even know about a certain show that is on FX, period. Donkey Kong looks fantastic. Great to see the other Kongs in the movie including Funky and Cranky (who is a king?). Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach is okay, even if the whole "strong leadership role" for women is being force fed to the audience here but compensating the entire "damsel in distress" role for Luigi instead doesn't sit well with me as Luigi is a capable fighter himself. It honestly would've been better to ditch that plot point entirely. I have a feeling that the producers of Illumination had to browbeat Miyamoto about what Peach's role had to be for the film in order for it to move forward. I can see the issue from all sides here but we're getting what we're getting.
Loved the Mario Kart sequence in the end. It's a wonderful touch that seems to emphasize the movie's climax and quite possibly the entire third act.
So, all in all, I'm still keen on seeing the movie but Illumination needs to stop pussyfooting with Chris Pratt as Mario. Can he work the role or not?
Jean-Karlo Lemus wrote: | Pratt's laughing all the way to the bank, but he'll be remembered as the worst part of an otherwise enjoyable movie. |
Which goes to show that Pratt has nothing to really laugh over. Money is only temporary, reputations are permanent. Pratt may ride on the coattails on his role as Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, but if his performance as Mario ultimately turns out to be a lemon, he won't escape the karma that will result from it. It's a cardinal mistake for any Hollywood celebrity to make.
Quote: | We also got to hear Charlie Day as Luigi, and while it's just Charlie Day being Charlie Day, even he can get away with it because, at the end of the, er, day, Charlie Day is leagues more entertaining and charming than Chris Pratt. (Two words: "Pepe Silvia"). Some promotional images on the Internet have shown the complete "Facebook Minions Meme"-tier taglines they've made up for the movie, most infamous being Luigi's "Get Luigi'd"; "Mama" Luigi Mario deserves better. Hell, even "Terminal Seven" would be better for the guy. That said: some images have shown the Mario bros in Brooklyn; acknowledging them as being from Brooklyn is an excellent nod to old, established lore. We also have some images floating around showing Pauline in Brooklyn, possibly as the mayor. |
Brooklyn...or New Donk City?
Quote: | I can see where people come from with not quite gelling with her odd mix of cartoony proportions and realistic movement and textures. But it doesn't bug me too much. And while Anya Taylor-Joy is a bit too subdued and girlbossy as Peach (I mean, people have loved Peach for being a bit of an openly-ditzy airhead since forever, let her be an airhead!) |
Considering what era we're in now, having Peach remain an airhead would be the kiss of death for this film. What worked in the games can't work in today's film environment. People expect women in strong, functional leadership positions now, even moreso if they are monarchs.
Quote: | she's channeling a ton of Peach's attitude from the Super Mario Adventures comic that ran in the pages of Nintendo Power long ago. Folks can claim that Princess Peach has been girlbossed—and she has been because That's How You Write Princesses In 2022™—but Peach has a reputation for being a firebrand. Super Mario Adventures had Peach willing to throw down with Bowser at a moment's notice, with Toads having to hold her back from slugging the Koopa King across the face. |
But how many of today's mainstream players even know of that comic? Unless I'm missing something, the comics themselves were never confirmed to be established canon to the Mario lore.
Quote: | And that's just the comic—even in the games, Peach has a history of being in the fray. She was playable way back in Super Mario Bros. 2, she was a party member in Super Mario RPG, and she had tons of playable sequences in the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games where she used her cunning to help piece apart villainous plans (and help Mario, while she was at it). |
Now this I can agree with. At least this part does confirm Peach's contributions to the gang.

With the fact that most of the people complaining the loudest about Pratt’s casting are adults yes the kids are not going to care all that much.

What Karma?

That and as much as people want to complain about other tropes being overused the Ditzy Airhead/Dumbass trope is also over used in numerous mediums especially animation.
