The subtitle timing is not a problem solely for Genesis Climber Mospeada, but for many of Crunchyroll's releases. Along with translations that make you wonder; if humans were even involved, they were having dungeon masters roll die 20 for translation accuracy, or if they were just pulling anyone off the street to do their translations.

As for the actual video, if what the reviewer said is true, then it is sad they didn't want to spend the money to spruce it up.

People slag Robotech for dumbing down Macross, but Mospeada and Southern Cross are improved by the rewrite and have probably been seen by more people in the US than Japan.

The bizarre splicing problems are apparently from the original Japanese source, appearing in both the old DVD release & even the recent BD boxset. ADV seemingly did go through the trouble of masking it for its DVD release in the 00s, but it's obvious that Crunchyroll just takes whatever they're given from the licensor (Tatsunoko, in this case) & doesn't bother to do any post-production work, if needed.

As for the review, I did find the "literal fever dreams where the cast becomes knock-off Saint Seiya characters and fights a dragon" line amusing, because Mospeada is from 1983, so it predates Saint Seiya by roughly three whole years. It's like the inverse of when people called DiC's Knights of the Zodiac in 2003 a "Ronin Warriors knock-off", despite Ronin Warriors itself technically being the "knock-off".

I hope we get Southern Cross soon. I made it about halfway through that on Amazon Prime before the license expired.

Amusingly enough, I do not remember the DVDs having bad subtitles on their releases. I might be wrong, because I bought them a decade ago.

Yeah, Mospeada and definitely Southern Cross would have died from obscurity in the 80s if it wasn't for Robotech. That feels like the census, that while Macross suffered the most for being part of Robotech, Southern Cross and Mospeada were greatly improved by being part of it.

The Robotech writers connected Southern Cross and Mospeada to Macross, fixing some characterization issues and improving some of the story beats. I think the writers deserve some praise for that.

Neither animes are particularly noteworthy on their own but added as parts 2 and 3 of a generational epic like Robotech adds a legacy to them that wouldn't have.

I love both Robotech and Macross in their own unique ways, but I don't think I love Southern Cross and Mospeada the same.

Dangit, beat me to it between the time I saw it on my phone and the time I could get to my keyboard.

Well, if anyone was going to beat me to it, I guess it would've been you.

I personally disagree with that since I found that Mospeada and Southern Cross were better in their original Japanese format. The whole subplot of Seifriet's character arc makes way more sense in the original Japanese series.

That one would be interesting to see, because the only "HD remastered" version of Southern Cross is technically Robotech Masters, due to Harmony Gold having its own film masters for Robotech. SC is such a forgotten show in Japan that it still isn't HD remastered and it isn't even streaming over there, from what I can tell.

I'm afraid I remember complaints about the DVD subtitles for Mospeada being kind of stiff, and had an impression they were correct when I last watched the series back in 2019. (I am part of the "Robotech generation," although peculiar enough to find Southern Cross in its original form interesting enough to rewatch as well...)

So in this release is it being treated as a standalone series without the edits and references to Robotech?

It's the original show with subs.

It's my understanding The Macross Saga and New Generation aren't as far off from their Japanese counterparts as people make them out to be and it's mainly Southern Cross that has the most extreme rewrites.

I thought Macross WAS Robotech and that Robotech was english rename shenanigans .

Before CR started streaming this, I actually stumbled upon the entirety of the series on youtube recently(like, ~1.5 months ago) and I was kinda amazed, but not in the way you'd think. At the very least I enjoyed the various ideas used that would today be seen as questionable(Yellow's dressing, everything Mint, etc.). Really, the romance was super awkward(esp between THOSE two; if you know, you know). Ray was the star character; I think the show would have been more interesting if he was the primary protagonist instead of Stig. Music was that classic 80s jig that just works, even though it is overall average.
