The funniest thing of all, at least from the research I once did, is that the "panties" CPM was packaging with the VHS tape for I Give My All weren't even real ones, but rather were simply paper cut-outs. As always, it is hilarious to look back on what was considered scandalous & reprehensible back in the day, only to think about what we get nowadays. It's like how the ESRB was effectively created due to Night Trap, Doom, & Mortal Kombat, yet now MK is gorier than ever, Doom is even more embracing of its demonic style, & everyone now knows that Night Trap was nowhere near those other two in terms of content; in fact, it's now rated T.
Honestly, I don't think much would have changed had CPM made its debut with I Give My All instead of Dominion Tank Police. Hell, I'm sure John O'Donnell would have still licensed Dog Soldier, regardless. The only difference would be that, instead of cat girls, CPM would have started with paper-thing fake panties. Whether or not that defines the anime industry best is up to you. |

I suspect that's one of those things fans made up. The LA Times article is dated 1991. The Fox News Channel didn't launch until 1996. The Fox network has never really run national news programming. If it happened, it would've been from a local station's news coverage. Back in 1991, only a handful of Fox affiliates ran news programming. If someone really wants to raid beta libraries (that may or may not exist anymore) you'll have only a small amount of cities to hit up.
Now that put a smile on my face. |

I watched the OVA years ago, and I found it pretty lightweight, though fun for the time. But I also remember, when I used to post to the old Usenet group rec.arts.anime (later rec.arts.anime.misc) Lea Hernandez speaking at length about the circumstances involving the title getting pulled (and Dog Soldier...gag being given as a replacement barf).
And yeah, couldn't have been Fox News, since they didn't exist yet on the national level. But I remember reading an article in my local newspaper where the Kidvid reviewer got hold of Project A-ko, Dominion Tank Police and one other I forget the name to. They (of course) described anime in general as "Adult cartoons" (because the Speed Racer and Astroboy we all grew up with at the time were "adult", right?) and was positively AGHAST at the concept of such themes in a cartoon! If someone had shown her Urotsukidoji I shudder to think of the response~ |

Oh, Jesus. Y'all didn't say a word about any of the other smut CPM put out over 15+ years, nor did any other family groups that I can find. |

You know CPM released Fencer of Minerva that had a lot of female enslavement and domination and whipping to it. And they were getting worked up about this title more because? |

Wow, thanks for digging up so many old stuff.
One thing I found it particularly interesting is the hilariously redrawn VHS cover of Gonad the Barbarian: turned out it was the (legal?) Swedish release; its distributor (as the back cover claims) is located at Kristianstad, along with a legit-looking phone number. Without the distinctive spacecraft I would never have guessed it and OME-1 were the same. Strangely enough, there is also an IMDb entry called "Sex Wars" with cast, staff, and even story much about the same, but it turns out to be a pornographic parody of Star Wars. Did Gonad the Barbarian simply rip off credits from Sex Wars? There is also an Italian release (under "Brothers Grime" label) that kept the original anime cover art, with much more skin uncovered compared to the Japanese release. Yet, its cover also features "Princess Orgasma and Mark Starkiller" just like the Swedish edition. Words can't describe my confusion at this moment (facepalm). |

I remember that was one of those hentai releases where they didn't provide the voice actor information for the Japanese cast as they didn't want to be associated with it. Though clearly Takehito Koyasu was in it, embarrassing as that would be for him. They listed the English cast though if I can remember. |

I was thinking along the lines of comparing this work to the typical American sex comedy where it's the guy who has to get the job done and the girl of his dreams is the object of his desire... and just having the girl be like "Hey, it takes two of us and I'm willing so let's just do it." kind of ruins the whole "objectification" thing these groups love to espouse offhandedly. From the article:
First: Why is it a satire of a sex comedy? Is I because it should be a guy? It's a sex comedy about the girl. What would have that era made of Yamada's First Time? Second: Mike's description put the ronin as the main character, here he doesn't even seem to be worth mentioning. "A guy wants to have sex? Is that shocking news?" Third: First. Love. Affair. The amount of bias packed into this single comment is incredible. What I get from it: "She's a slut and everyone knows it". |

Fencer of Minerva seemed like a recipe for complaints, especially since at least one release was labeled for 16+ instead of 18+. Most stores will sell suggested 16+ DVDs to minors of any age (from personal experience), meaning that kids had easy access to softcore hentai (as opposed to I Give My All, which was borderline hentai). I guess in 2005 (when the DVDs labeled as 16+ came out) Focus on the Family was more focused on...SpongeBob. |

To say nothing of Night Trap getting a 25th anniversary edition about a month ago. XD |

Now all a minor has to do to find something like that is to google it. |

This is why I like you, Mike. I'll pilot the time machine if you want shotgun. Someone else can kill Hitler - we've got anime to watch! |

Fun article. I don't think it would have made much of a difference if the first major OVA was a sex comedy rather than something ultraviolent. As long as Ranma 1/2 ends up in Blockbuster in the end.
Am I the only one that always gets L.A. Times paywall page? Can never seem to access their site. If the article isn't that long, can someone cut/paste it here (I ask "can" because I don't know if ANN allows that). |

Page 1 Page 2 I didn't know much about I Give My All, so thanks for an interesting read. Gonad the Barbarian gave me a good laugh. |
