Some of my favorite manga artists have a verity of preferences. Akira Toriyama's color illustration work is done entirely on the computer these days but if he draws manga he prefers to do it on paper with ink. I would be overjoyed if I could get my hands on a single original inked page! His style also stands out because he generally doesn't use tones. My favorite erotic manga artist, Seizou Ebisubashi (DO NOT search his name on your work computer. You've been warned!) draws entirely on the computer and is artwork is gorgeous! I myself sometimes do both. Sometimes I sketch on paper and tie it down digitally or sometimes I'll do ink on paper like for Inktober or whatnot. I also do a lot on the computer as well. There are so many options now that it's great to see the tools my favorites artists choose.
With that said, somebody needs to license Manben! That show is brilliant! Great for reference. |

Clip Studio and Manga Studio are actually the same thing, the developer just changed the name for the Western release.

Thanks for link. Open source programs definitely do help, but there's something special about using those ultra-expensive programs. |

Do manga artists generally letter the pages by themselves (or done by a specific assistant) or do they send the finished artwork and script to the editor and then the lettering is done in-house at the publisher?

Typically, there's someone whose job it is to do lettering (assistant, someone in publishing, etc.), but there are a good number of mangaka who do their own lettering, too. Oftentimes, it depends on the needs and preferences of the author or work itself. |

Tones took me quite a while to understand both the how and why they were used. I used to see it referenced in the older-school "How to Draw.." books and such but did not quite get that there was an actual market for transparent pages with dots or lines on them.
"What's so hard about drawing consistent lines or creating dots?" .... "Ohhhhhhh... THAT'S why tones are used." Even a competent artist can have difficulty with color gradients and shadows, or creating uniform patterns by hand. |

It is worth noting that Clip Studio frequently has half off sales, where you can get the basic version for $25 and the fancy one (with animation options, etc) for around $100. They also discount the upgrade option between versions if you change your mind later. Pretty darn cheap, all things considered. |
