I've been reading it, and the dichotomy between good/evil is so thick you can cut it with a knife. However, Inuyashiki himself, even though spoiler[he has become a badass machine and is still in the process of discovering his abilities thanks to Ando], gives not just a pitiful air, but that of an spoiler[old man who truly has nobody left, and he has practically abandoned his only family - the dog, since he sees himself as a bit of a monster.] Honestly, machine or not, I, for one, wish I could give Inuyashiki a hug.

Okay, if that's not a joke about the "Eating alone" quote, I must ask: WHAT is our national anger-management psychological preoccupation with jokes about senior citizens eating dinner at 4:30? Yes, they do it, but why is it the only joke we ever tell about them now? It started out as just a funny observation of restaurant traffic, and now it's become the single go-to cathartic attempt for our 18-24 society's dearest wish to hammer whiny, fragile old people bloody with their own tennis-ball canes. We live in a fandom where, if you were in Japan, you would immediately be assumed to be lazy, perverted, Internet-addicted and militantly jobless if you said you liked anime-- And yet we turn around and ascribe dozens of punishing imaginary stereotypes to another group, just to work out our own helpless social frustrations of what we socially associate with their very presence that annoys us. I'm not going to get into "Hypocrisy" issues, I'm just going to say that The Unexamined Joke Is Not Worth Telling. And might want to take a second look at this joke, it's getting a bit creepy around the edges.

Here is my MU review:
The Six Million Yen Man - Grandpa Edition 8/10 The first volume is very interesting if highly strange and i dislike Hiroya´s manga that aren´t called Gantz (8/10 and i reviewed it too) so i was cautious at first but maybe he will finally become a rounded author. The theme covered here like youth delinquency and hobo hunting are of course familiar but all i saw is very intriguing. The only thing that worries me is the giant self praise the author gives himself at the end of the first volume but this new work is a good step forward overall and the digital art is state of the art as always. I hope Oku decides this time to actually finish his series and only time will tell. Also kudos for the ageing leading man as he is finally something somewhat fresh on the main character front. Update: This is now a Hiroya manga alright as even the usual subplot showed in which a generic but kind hearted guy ends up with a woman who is both a well endowed sex pot and a Yamato nadeshiko. Expect hardcore normal and sexual violence and less Slice of Life but i like the hard-R vigilante grandpa version too and the series is further starting to remind me of I Am a Hero (8,5/10). This....sounds utterly, deliriously insane and quite, quite amazing. Dark Horse should really give this some consideration.

Good writeup, I'm definitely going to check this out. Looking forward to an eventual column on GANTZ, especially if you cover the completely insane later parts of the story.

I'm not sure whether I like Gantz or Inuyashiki better.... thooooough OK, honestly, I might prefer Gantz. Inuyashiki is a much simpler story (so far) with more black-and-white good-vs-evil morality, whereas Gantz is all about the ruthless, amoral tough choices. Also, Gantz's central pull was the "What the hell is going on?" mystery, and wondering what weird aliens would show up next, whereas in Inuyashiki the plot elements are pretty upfront and it's more a question of wondering how they're going to develop. (Though of course, Oku could always throw in some more robots, or weirder robot power-ups...) Basically the most obvious difference between the two is whether you want a really violent, gory, sexed-up series about a traditional mostly good-guyish hero (I say *mostly* good-guyish... the scene <spoiler>where he blinds and paralyzes all the yakuza</spoiler> was pretty ruthless) or a really violent, gory, sexed-up series about a bunch of messed-up people just trying to survive. But on the other hand, Inuyashiki has the 58-year-old oyaji protagonist, and that's a huge plus regardless of all other factors.

Gantz had potential but then blew it by pretty much being just devolving into mindless violence, having plot holes (that I don't think were ever fixed), and having one of the douchiest main characters I've ever seen.
If Inuyashiki avoids that along with having a depressing ending it'll be leagues better than Gantz. |

So people exist who haven't finished magnum opus. Wow. So his "magum opus" ended about 2 years go, i read chap. 383 on the day of release and phase 3 is a mess overall. An interesting one though and i fully expect Oko to come out with phase 4 after his drug money runs out.
Isn´t he loosing money on Inuyashiki or did i get my math wrong. Numbers are hard. Killing jakuza though... I somehow have a feeling that this tale could work if it was adapted by Americans (who have the money) into a tv mini series too as none would fund an anime based on it. |
