I haven't played the original DS game, so I'm playing Another Code as a completely new player, but I've enjoyed what I've played so far. I have noticed a lot of people dismissing adventure games like this as "not real video games" which to me is downright stupid. There's no rule stating that video games have to be all open world action games.

I played the English Trace Memory game years ago, and it was short enough that it became the first game (and one of the only games) I ever beat in a day. It's really short, but its story was so engaging that I played it over and over, sometimes just to experience the best story beats over again. It has a dear place in my heart. I also had a childhood crush on Ashley. I was so emotionally involved in her story and wanted to be an emotional support, but she was also a bit older than me at the time. It's funny and a bit strange to think about now as an adult now. I was so excited when they announced the remake! And that I was getting to play the sequel, finally!
The new game is extremely pretty. The new coat of paint is actually quite nice, I think, and I like the characters' animations and voice acting (in JapaneseーI don't know what the English voices or script are like, but I heard the acting is a little awkward at times). The puzzles were never complicated, but the DS version were unique in thst they would utilize the dual screens to solve puzzles, including requiring you to close the DS to "combine" things on both screens. It was cool, but not something you can do on the Switch, so it's inevitable that these puzzles have been made even more simple now. My only real problem is that the game is pretty clunky. It plays pretty slow, menu navigation is simple, but feels like too many buttons to access the camera (which you'll be using a lot), some solutions are obvious, but how to accomplish solving them using the in-game mechanics isn't always clear, the game doesn't make it clear that you have to interact with some objects twice to trigger progression, it can be a slog to retread ground (though not much), and if you put it on auto-play for cutscenes, the pacing of the dialogue progression is a bit weird, so I highly recommend turning auto-play off. But I always suspected this was a relatively low-budget remake focused on presentation, so none of these issues are game-breaking. Even if the gameplay itself isn't memorable, the story and characters are very much so. If you like story-focused games, especially ones with a little mystery to them, this is a hidden gem I cannot recommend enough! <3 |

I have the original on the Wii, but never played it.

I need to get back to it, kind of stalled out in chapter 3 of the first game due to the new Ace Attorney collection motivating me to replay Spirit of Justice.
Will say the glacial pacing of the game kind of makes it hard for me to get invested in. Generally enjoy it but the process of, "Walk into a room. Learn a girl's name. Walk into another room. Learn how she's related to D. Walk into another room. Hear about her dad being injured. Walk into another room. Hear what the injury was," just feels like a lot of exposition that could have been pretty easily done all at once being dealt out piecemeal in a way that doesn't actually do anything to make it more interesting. |

It was such a shock to see the Another Code collection announced at that Nintendo Direct, but I'm so happy it's getting some recognition and such a gorgeous rerelease.
I ended up getting nostalgic and checking out old interviews and articles, and Rika Suzuki, the VP and scenario writer for most of the main characters including Kyle Hyde and Ashley, had such interesting ideas for the future of Cing's best (imho) franchises. We were robbed of an Ashley/Kyle crossover! (Interview below. Isn't it so weird how much of the internet would be lost forever without the Wayback machine?) https://web.archive.org/web/20141010125218/http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/55751/features/cing-the-final-chapter/?page=1#null Anyway, so excited about this. It gives me hope that we might see a Hyde collection someday, but finally being able to play AC R is enough |

Thank you for sharing! I chuckled a little when I scrolled to the comments and read "We'll never see Ashley again". I bet that person was ecstatic to find out about the remake! |
