Lots of respect to Ian for how many Aniplex titles they got. I’m a poor college student, so I’m much more content with my all-region bluray player and importing from the UK, since they’re much cheaper there lol

I liked the 90s OVA version I watched earlier this year, though it really didn't go that far with Hyou's character. He was only in one episode of the OVA and that was it if I can remember. The English dub to it though stunk and I pretty much stuck to the Japanese language option. I think I'll like the 2016 series as it expands more than the OVAs did, and it's not horrible like that retread of The Guyver from the early 00s.
Really you have to be careful when you are re-adapting and redoing old 90s OVAs and not end up like either that Guyver one or even worse Babel II: Beyond Infinity which both make the OVAs look like masterworks in anime by comparison. |

I actually found the ushio and tora manga randomly online one day and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it and like the reviewer was satisfied that all loose ends was neatly wrapped up and all their seemingly random side encounters came to a head together in the climax.
I was also completely floored that just a month after I was done reading it, it got greenlit for an anime out of nowhere, since I held no expectations that I was ever gonna see this story animated and on top of that the anime did its source material justice and I loved every second of it. |

Ian: Your shelves are goals. I'm also impressed you bought Cardcaptor Sakura twice. Is it an attachment to the Pioneer volumes or simply that you haven't gotten around to selling them yet?

Ushio and Tora takes a bit to really get going and apparently it skipped some chapters of the manga but it's probably one of the best Shonen fighting series adaptations of recent times. And it's does have one thing over Yu Yu Hakusho, it keeps itself together until the very end unlike YYH which stated to fall apart around the Sensui arc due to Togashi burning himself out.

I usually don't sell, even if I buy something twice. But mostly because it took a fair amount of work to tack down the Pioneer disks. The only thing that was more difficult was fighting the ebay snipers over Paranoid Agent. |

I can't wait to hear Ushio & Tora's dub. Brett Weaver coming back to voice Tora has to be the major highlight.

I've cheeked out a couple of the dubbed episodes and I quite like them. Ushio fits his character well, and Brett was born to play Tora. Ian did a good job as Nagare. I thought Luci would e a better suit for Asako, but I suppose they wanted her original VA instead. Tiffany as Saya was odd, I usually see her playing hot blooded teenage girls.

I disagree. The Sensuii arc/Chapter Black saga is some of the best stuff from Yu Yu Hakusho. The three kings arc is where the manga started to fade, but the anime version is better because it expands on and shows fights that we're not in the manga. Of course it's all subjective and up to a difference of opinion. |

Ushio To Tora is by far my favorite shounen ever. Am I upset they had to cut some stuff out to make 39 episodes? Yeah, but goddamn was that final arc worth it. It had everything I could want from a world ending battle. And let's not forget Hakumen No Mono, the most terrifying thing in decades. It's a youko version of Alucard but much meaner and with absolutely no redeeming quality. It's evil incarnate. spoiler[literally].
Watch Ushio To Tora. Watch it now. You will not regret it. It was absolutely wonderful and I hope something like this comes out again. |

While the 2011 Hunter x Hunter is my top battle shonen anime, Ushio and Tora is definitely one of the better ones of recent years, and I'd say it was one of the best shows of its season(s), especially the last third. It does a good job capturing the spirit of 90's shonen while also appealing to modern sensibilities. Yu Yu Hakusho is definitely a good comparison, and I say that as someone who recently watched the entirety of that series (Actually Yu Yu Hakusho did have more animation chops than Gabriella gives those shows credit for, courtesy of Atsushi Wakabayashi and Akiyuki Shinbo which you can read more about here)

I loved following Ushio and Tora week to week. It was such a classic style that it actually felt original, somehow. That one scene where Hakumen no Mono shows up during that time-travel arc (spoiler[vomited out of 9 of the emperor's concubines]) is one i'll never forget.
The author of the manga did another one recently that i love quite a lot, called "The Ghost and the Lady"; you'd swear it's from the early 90s from the art style, but it's only a couple years old. I absolutely recommend it if you enjoyed Ushio and Tora; it's available in 2 nice hardcover volumes in english. |
