As an old with a faltering memory who tries to juggle way too many currently airing shows at once, what I would find way more useful than a preview is a recap at the start just to remind me what went on last time. Some shows do this, but I wish it was mandatory. It's a win for the production committee too because it eats up screentime without having to create new animation.

Please no. Hero Academia recaps are cancer.

Don't know why you want to bring HeroAca in specific. One Piece recaps are 10 times worse. Literally the only instance where HeroAca's recaps are that level of bad is Hellish Hell ans nothing else.

I'm not watching Hero Academia, so I have no idea what the recaps are like for it. And I'm definitely not talking about recap abuse where they go on for, like, 5 minutes or so. Just a quick hit to remind me of what went on last time. In worst case situations, I find myself having to go back and rewatch the last 5 minutes of the previous episode just so the new episode will make sense. Again, probably wouldn't need this if I was only trying to keep track of a handful of shows, but my name is Blood- and I am an anime addict.

Doesn’t that still exist if you watch on Japanese TV?

I think part of the problem is that so many streaming services (Amazon, Netflix, Hulu at least) will pop up a prompt as the credits roll offering to skip to the next episode. If you have auto-play next episode enabled, you have about 5 seconds to cancel it before it skips automatically.

Since the previews are after credits, they are skipped if you don't cancel the next episode skip.

It sure does! Can attest to this watching Cable TV on a trip over there recently - it just doesn't see it's way to english online-streams the way it did in some fansubs of ye' ol' age.

Spoken like someone who never made it to the Enies Lobby arc.

The golden standard for next episode previews were the ones for Kokoro Connect, of all things. They were very theatrical about it, always ending with a strong hook and transitioning perfectly smoothly into the ending theme song. Perhaps the only example I can think of where the next episode previews actually elevated a series.

For the related topic of previous episode recaps, I always liked how Durarara handled them. It was incorporated for like 5-10 seconds in the opening itself, just quickly recounting a handful of the most pertinent bits to reference for the upcoming episode specifically. Always got me a little more pumped up for the new episode. (Also helps the OPs were always so good.)

Didn't Baccano! do that too? It's certainly one way to keep you from skipping the OP. Very Happy

One little known aspect of this, I think, is that the next episode preview was almost always the LAST thing that gets edited into the final master tapes back in the day.

Which makes sense since it's usually footage from the next episode...

So it often caused delays in the delivery of the final master when schedules got crunched... Sometime maybe like 10 years ago or so, they started to deliver the next episode previews on seperate master tapes, now that TV stations injest things digitally, so it didn't delay the delivery of the main episode, and that trickled down to foreign streaming services, who get the digital copy of the main episode master, but often the next episode preview wouldn't be included anymore (it would be, essentially, a second tape to digitize and why pay the extra cost)

This isn't true for all anime productions, but basically the next episode previews are treated more like a weekly PV than part of the episode now, and handled by the marketing for stuff like it says in the article, uploading to youtube, etc.

Right you are. And for a show like Durarara that was especially helpful because those pertinent bits could have happened a few episodes back, so reminding folks was especially important. I apologize for my fixation on something that wasn't actually part of this week's Answerman, but coincidentally, the topic of recaps to start off an episode has been on my mind lately and it seemed a natural segue way from discussing the very end of an episode.

Never really cared for them. I'd watch them, but always prefer to go in blind with anticipation and enjoy things in the moment.
