So, why am I putting so much into this? Because frankly, Fandom sucks. Currently serving as the hosts for countless Wikia pages covering all manner of, er, fandom topics: from widespread stuff like The Office to Ultra-kaiju repositories. and every last one of those pages is utterly, hopelessly illegible: intrusive ads, auto-playing videos, massive banners covering half the damn page... it is an absolute miserable chore to read what is basically a wiki-entry and glean any kind of information on anything. And it's even worse on mobile, where at best you can only really get a quarter of the page visible at any time with the rest occupied by worthless cruft.

Ad block(Ublock Origin) rules. I have NONE of that stuff. Not even on mobile(android) where instead of chrome I use Firefox ...with ad block. Smile (don't worry, I have a sub on ANN)

I find fandom only BARELY usable even with adblock. Their design is just absolutely awful and their SEO pushing heros/villains/whatever wiki to the top of every search is annoying too.

I despise the fact that they acquired Curse (and apparently the Zelda wiki? I missed that). I'm gonna miss when Gamefaqs was nice and usable

Congrats on the chair.

Wow, those macrotransactions though. Skeevier than half of Lilith's H-scenes.

Got my Xenoblade 3 artbook; interesting little tidbits abound.

As for the news, how awkward this entire week has been about casting, some of it even getting into the outright slimy:

-Gamefaqs: Get cracking; this stuff needs to be on the Wayback Machine pronto, and download any FAQs you really liked, especially for obscure stuff. I don't trust Fandom one bit not to muck this entire thing up.

-Bayonetta 3: I figured it was Hale the first time I heard her. And despite fan conspiracy theories trying to think this is some kind of narrative feint, it's pretty clear this is just a recast, nothing more. I've heard Hale's voice for nearly thirty years now when she was in Carmen Sandiego. Also, playing Bayonetta is Hale basically going back to one of her early roles in Black Cat in the Spider-Man animated series who was a sultry type Hale hasn't done a lot of as she's more known as the stern badass (and Cinderella). Looking forward to it.

-Mario: Okay. So. Two thoughts. One) This could be good, if Pratt's casting doesn't screw it up. Two) Jack Black is going to shred. All in all, it looks great so I'm cautiously optimistic.

For the fandom websites/wiki pages, even with AdBlock, it seems to break the webpage occasionally....

The Mario trailer looked a lot better than I expected! But even with the limited dialogue from Chris Pratt, I don't expect him to sound much different that what we got.

Finally, I'd like to throw Cannon Busters into the ring as a competitor for a badly run crowd funded campaign. At least we eventually got the pilot a year or so ago (and no other rewards?), but leaving the campaign to go get Netflix to fund a proper show with no other details? Yeah, I'm not too high on LeSean Thomas right now. (And no, I haven't watched the pilot)

It's got extensive forums where people could gather and share info or FAQs on games,

And also be homophobic, racist, make thread after thread of bait showing their extreme dislike of something not as bad as they’re making it out to be.

That’s not the worst part of the mobile version. I don’t know if this is a problem brand wide but there’s this annoying glitch I came across reading the One Piece wikia where the page would auto snap to the top of the page repeatedly…for no reason.

Confused Hope this not how we’re measuring how popular a character is.

I mean not all of us remember Lou Albano voiced Mario in the animated cartoon.

That's an odd way to bill Chris Pratt. I'm sure kids know him from being the main character in The Lego Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Praising SEGA also seems weird because they celebrity casted Sonic and Knuckles. Not sure how Tails kept his VA, maybe since they didn't plan on a sequel and having her cameo at the end of the first movie locked her into the role, but SEGA didn't seem to care about replacing Roger Craig Smith who was actually upset over his exclusion compared to Charles Martinet and Shigeru Miyamoto giving Pratt their blessings

But Charles Martinet is still gonna be yahoo-ing his way as the Mario Bros, and Wario, and Waluigi. And if Nintendo sees fit to keep him around, the question is going to remain: why wasn't he good enough for Mario's big break?

The thing with Martinet is that he was essentially stuck between a rock & a hard place, to be perfectly honest. If he was cast as Mario, then one of two things would have happened:

1. He'd do the entire movie in his standard Mario voice, which would quickly become grating & maddening to hear for an entire feature length film. Martinet's Mario works excellently in small bursts, but most certainly wouldn't work with actual, full-length conversations. If he had done this, he'd risk fans coming to hate his Mario voice.

2. He'd alter his performance so that it sounds more "normal" & would work for a feature-length movie. However, that would result in fans complaining about how he was "forced" to change how he does Mario, and the end result wouldn't be too far off from what's happening with Chris Pratt, i.e. "How dare they change it!".

I fully understand the complaints about recastings in Hollywood productions based on iconic franchises with long-standing voice actors in roles, but I'd argue that Mario is an exception to that, because Charles Martinet's Mario isn't meant for anything more than quick yelps & single lines voiced in isolation. At least he will still be a part of the movie by doing various voice cameos, so I wouldn't be surprised if he get a gag where Mario thinks about his father & we get a flashback where Martinet gets to use his Mario voice for the father. In a moment like that, the voice would work perfectly.

That's a good point with Roger Craig Smith, but I'd also argue that there were so many other Sonic VAs before him (Jaleel White, Jason Griffith, Ryan Drummond) and all of them have such a different "feel" that you can make the legitimate argument Ben Schwarz is just playing a different take on Sonic: a less-cocksure inexperienced Sonic who is more of a kid than Smith's. Smith did have every right to be pissed nevertheless.

It might not be how we do it, but it sure is how I do it. And considering Overwatch's porn is a legit part of its Wikipedia article (its impossible to talk about Overwatch's cultural footprint without bringing up all the SFM porn), its a justified take.

Come on, man. You can't be surprised I bring up Action Taimanin and then otherwise make sideways references to a game's naughty fan-works.

Hasn't stopped him from doing whole trade-shows in the Mario voice. I mean, voice acting is all about characters sounding annoying for upwards of an hour and change. Frank Welker isnt even the first Scooby Doo VA, but he didn't give Scooby perfect diction for "Scoob!" because "going 'Ruh-roh, Rhaggy!' would be annoying for a two-hour flick. Or, like, E.G. Dailey doing the "baby" voice for Tommy Pickles for a whole movie.

We have several full-length feature films where Donald Duck talks like... that. In the grand scheme of things, a chirpy overdone italian accent is peanuts for a flick.

GameFAQs tested some site changes a while ago, but didn't keep any of them aside from merging multi-platform message boards. The other changes seemed universally hated, as they screwed with how some guides were displayed. I would be amused if they go back and finally implement that, and then Fandom gets blamed.

My main concern is if they mess with the approvals queue. It's often pretty fast, but sometimes stuff gets stuck for over a week. I'd be concerned if they either do something that makes it slower, or speed things up but drop standards so a bunch of crap gets through.

Also, GameFAQs already had and removed wikis, since nobody really used them, but I wouldn't be shocked if they tried to force those on us again.

My Xenoblade 3 CE was also finally delivered... to Japan. But at least it physically exists and I'll be able to arrange stateside shipping soon. I'm sure my collection will lose some value having only the third book in Japanese, but for me it's enough just to have it on hand to flip through.

GameFAQs: That was also me, back in the day. I think I even still have a guide or two up, tied to an account I no longer have the email for. Fan wikis have largely replaced more traditional guides for quick info, but with GameFAQs all you needed was one dedicated fan. I never expected Fandom would literally eat GameFAQs. Sad

Bayo 3: Jennifer Hale is a legend, so if Bayonetta had to be recast... Okay, fine. We could do much worse. Though now that I think about it, it would have been funny if they got Laura Bailey, just for the Kaine joke.

Red Ash: Just the other day (month? year?) someone was trying to convince me the Red Ash OVA was already out. My memory isn't that far gone yet! Glad to see it's out for real, if only as a memorial piece.

Worthelss factoid: The Japanese name of "MegaMan Legends" is "Rockman Dash." Red Ash. Redash. Re:Dash. That's also how the title pronounced in Japanese. Inafune doesn't do subtle. Laughing

Taimanin: Annerose is quite a collab pick, but definitely on-brand. Sorry about the price tag, dude.

Mario: If you absolutely must do celebrity stunt casting, Jack Black is perfect for Bowser. And he also does game roles (rarely), so it's not quite as much of a stretch.

With Colleen O'Shaughnessy still getting top billing for voicing Tails in the Sonic movies, the words "Sega Does What Nintendon't" still ring true. Don't cash the checks all in one place, Chris.
Now that is a properly retro burn. I kinda wish Disney had done as much for Jim Cummings in Christopher Robin, but at least he still kept his many roles.

I'm not entirely sold on Pratt's Mario yet, but from what I saw in the trailer, both Jack Black and Keenan Michael-Key made a really good impression as Bowser and Toad respectively. I was initially on the fence about seeing a 3D-animated Mario movie when it was first announced, but I think I might be willing to give it a chance after seeing the teaser. It's just too bad we won't be hearing Danny DeVito and Willem Dafoe as Wario and Waluigi respectively. Laughing

1) Part of that depends on how the movie does. If it is extremely good or extremely bad, people will definitely remember it. Consider how Bob Hoskins is easily remembered as Mario in part because of how bad the movie did. And how much controversy there is over Pratt's casting. So unless the result is forgettable mediocre, people will remember.

2) Calling Chris Pratt 'the guy from the Parks and Recreations reruns' feels disingenuous, considering he is the in the Marvel and Jurassic Park franchises. And the LEGO movies.

Recently I've been looking at some Naruto wiki pages and noticed this pulsing bar at the top of the pages, that causes all the text to move with every pulse. Gotta try reloading pages to get rid of it to actually make pages readable without a headache. This is with ublock on btw.

Whenever I want to look up something JoJo related I always make sure to check JoJo's Bizarre Encyclopedia over Fandom's.

Was starting to suspect that the Bayo voice change theory was gonna just be cope, but still sad to hear.

Just yesterday was thinking about how I watched the Red Ash OVA a few years back, and that the project must definitely be dead now. I thought it was a fun short.
