Captain Tsubasa is not just the first one, and not just the best, but definitely the series that turned the Japanese football team into what it is now.

Couldn't finish the first episode of Days. When they show the MC running in the opposite direction the ball was going with his eyes closed, I had to stop. Such a horrible MC.

Days got better, but never very good. Knight in the Area was just as bad, worse in some ways. You'd be better off with Aoki Densetsu Shoot!, Whistle!, or Ginga e Kickoff!!, which isn't as good as Tsubasa, but is kinda weird, and fun, and full of heart.

Does Viz usually hold onto their licenses like this? I thought they usually stream on Crunchyroll, or Daisuke in the past. Maybe they want it to be on Toonami?

Nowadays, Casval Rem Deikun's alias in Zeta is generally romanized as "Quattro Bajeena", but it's (arguably) pronounced the way it appears in the poll. It's the character's third alias (you might know him better by his second alias, "Char Aznable"), and therefore his "fourth name", hence the "Quattro" part.

ANN please don't call the most popular sport on out planet by it's nonsensical North American name. It's Football, thank you very much.

Most non-Americans reading this site who care about football immediately recognize that "soccer" means "football", but most Americans don't think of anything other than "American football" when they hear "football"... makes sense to cover all the bases.

Also, it’s called soccer (or sokkā) in Japan, which is where anime is made.

@BodaciousSpacePirate
If that's the problem, then why not call it by it's full official name Association Football? The word soccer is nothing more than diminutive of the word Association. It's not the proper name of the sport. And ANN should use proper terms in their articles, not diminutives.

Okay, now I shall make a BETTER list of FOOTBALL anime

- Captain Tsubasa (all series but to varying enjoyment levels. 2001 series being the least enjoyable)
- Hungry Heart Wild Striker (from the creator of CT but has more character relationships as opposed to CT where he purposefully avoided that and kept it as raw sports)
- Aoki Densetsu, Shoot!
- Whistle!
- Giant Killing
- Moero! Top Striker
- Days (I only put this because I needed 7)

And there's a manga called Football Girl (Shuukyuu Shoujo) which is straight up ecchi.
