My favorite of his is Sensei no Kaban which is written by KAWAKAMI Hiromi who also wrote the original book. Look it up if it came to your region as it is truly "excellent".
I am actually not so crazy about some of the stories Jiro comes up with but his storytelling is of course top notch. All of his series come out in germany btw. as way more manga tend to reach Europe than the US.

Edit: Yep The Ice Wanderer is a must too and his 2nd best.

Sounds like this would make a good companion piece to the short manga "Shokaro" which appears in Taniguchi's The Ice Wanderer (all of which is excellent) which tells of a manga-ka reminiscing about the strange apartment he once lived in. I don't know if that story is at all autobiographical but it is very interesting as an example of taking one of the most worn-out of manga/anime plotlines and giving it a dose of reality.

Taniguchi is one of my favorite artists; I feel his art is a bit stronger than his writing which can occasionally be predictable. He often does the art for other writers (as with Hotel Harbour View, also well worth it if you can track down a copy).

I really want to read Jiro Taniguchi's works but they are really hard to find. It would have been better if these were published by Vertical or Yen Press.
