I thought I would love Bucchigiri since I have a soft spot for delinquent characters, I've liked all of Utsumi's other works and with me being a big Yu-Gi-Oh! fan, Takahiro Kagami being the chief animation director and doing the character designs was like a dream collab.
But Arajin just sucks so much man! It's one thing to be the only non deliquent and straight one in the setting but being a garbage human being is another. He just sucks the fun out of every scene he's in and it's such a shame! He did some good stuff in the latest episode but it wasn't nearly enough and we're already halfway in.
I like everything else about the show and Mahoro doesn't even bother me so I'm still continuing but it's been a disappointment.
As for Tokyo Revengers, I watched the first two seasons and read the rest of the manga to the end. In my opinion, it's just badly written and the pacing and animation of the adaptation are atrocious. I've rarely seen such a popular show look so ugly.
But I still don't hate any of the characters as much as Arajin! Takemichi is not well written but at least he has good intentions and tries to better himself.
So I'm still waiting for a good modern delinquent anime. Wind Breaker is coming out next season but I don't have high hopes.

While I am happy to see Hareluya II BØY get acknowledged in this topic, as it does deserve mention, this line was disappointing to see:
Quote: | Hareluya Hibino using his powers as the literal son of Jehovah |
It shows that the anime itself seemingly wasn't actually watched, because this is a bit of a misnomer that maintains itself online. The closest this gets to being anywhere near true in the final episode, and if you actually watch the entire thing, including the post-credits final scene... it's revealed that the events of the episode itself were pretty much all just a wild dream Hareluya was having during class.
Anyway, I do find it interesting to see delinquent TV anime becoming more of a thing nowadays, because prior to Tokyo Revengers it was a genre that was pretty much exclusive to OVAs & movies, with BØY being the only real exception for TV. Really makes me wish we'd just finally get a Rokudenashi Blues TV anime, at this point.

I confess that I don't watch this anime. But I was curious about it being compared to the delinquent anime of the past. Does it actually have similarities to something like Crowns or Worst?
The random videos I saw about it didn't seem to show this, at least one of the elements intrinsically linked to delinquent manga like teenagers smoking or fighting with baseball bats weren't in the trailers.
Please I would like more details.

I thought the virginity joke would have just been a setup and his character would develop but it really is just a one note joke that kills this show. I think this last episode pissed me off the most when he watched his childhood friend? get beat close to death and the only thing that made him jump into the fight was the girl, who hates him, getting beat up. In that moment his wish could have changed to something different like to save a friend or protect a girl but we get the exact same tired "to loose my virginity" line and that just sucks. Any other character in that show would have been better than Arajin.

I agree completely! The reason I said that he did some good stuff is because he went against Shindo for what he said about Mahoro and he helped Matakara get up but it's really the bare minimum.
I think the show will give him everything he wants then he'll lose everything and finally realize how much of a bad person he was. But they made Arajin too hateable for me to really care even if that happens.
The virginity joke has never been funny to me either.

I actually don't know much about delinquent anime of the past (I've been meaning to remedy that) but I can answer your questions.
There are teenagers smoking in a temple in the 1st episode but that's it. As for the bats, there aren't any so far. Two of the three main gangs fight with their bare fists. The other one, NG Boys, uses a weapon mixing a whip and a blade.
I doubt we'll see any because the use of weapons has been deemed cowardly by most of the cast and there's a big emphasis on honor being fighting with your own strength.

I will try and watch if I can stand 6 more episodes just to see how this train wreck ends but I think you are 100% right with where this story is headed. I don't know if I have ever really watched a show that I hated a main character as much as I hate this one.

I loved Kenka Banchou Otome! I still dream of it becoming a full length series one day.
Reading all the examples of delinquents randomly showing up and the tropes they embody or subvert, I couldn't help thinking of Ace of Diamond (because I'm the only who ever does) and all its yanki characters. The coach is a former delinquent type who still sports a DA and shades, the third years have Isashiki, who's always spoiling for a fight and growls at everyone, and 2nd year Kuramochi, who dressed like a yanki in middle school with dyed blond hair and the short uniform coat, and nearly lost his chance to play anywhere after beating up the mayor's son. There's a pitcher on another one-shot team and Inashiro's catcher, who both embody the 40 year old delinquent look, though the latter wears a topknot ponytail. Actually about half the players in the series seem to be rough enough to give Silver Spoon's Holstein Club a run for the tough guys crown. But then a disproportionate number of sports anime have always had a delinquent vibe going on, even if it's a redirection of the men-bonding-through-their-fists trope toward the rule-bound brawling of competition (see Slam Dunk and Hajime no Ippo, e.g.).
Anyway, I'm enjoying Bucchigiri?! a lot, Arajin notwithstanding. Not sure what his deal is yet, but I'm willing to wait for him to redeem himself.
