Quote: | Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is one of those games that I have been harping on others to play for ages. For well over a decade. |
Saaaaaaame.
Ghost Trick is -- and I cannot possibly emphasize this enough -- one of the all-time greatest adventure games. Yup, right up there with Monkey Island and Grim Fandango.
Quote: | − Upscaled graphics lose much of the original's novelty, Relatively short with little replay value |
It's impossible to overstate just how impressive the original game's visuals were. I still distinctly remember brining my 3DS screen right up close to my eyeballs in order to better examine the sprites -- the animation was so fluid, so perfect, that I couldn't tell if they were 2D sprites or (somehow) 3D models. It was an absolutely unthinkable level of quality for a DS game, and honestly still sticks out almost as much today.
And while that novelty may be gone, I'm still very excited to play the remaster at 2160p -- that high of a fidelity makes the I ages so crisp, makes the details so easy to spot, all of which was impossible with the original. Just playing the demo, alone, really gave me a ne ewes appreciation for the art direction.
Truly a shame we never got a sequel.

Thanks for the review! Can’t wait to play on my Switch Lite
It’s a shame that the ’ Ghost Puzzles’ are merely sliding picture puzzles. Oh well
Hopefully, this remaster sells well. Dunno if I would want a sequel seeing as story is self-contained

Personally, I have no desire to see the story continued. My interest in a sequel is more about seeing the setting, mechanics, and storytelling iterated on -- add on to the existing mechanics to tell a new story with new characters from the POV of another time-traveling ghost.
The only real problem I see see with making a sequel is that it'd (likely inevitably) try to reproduce the big plot twist from the original game, because that was such a big (and beloved) reason why it was such a big hit with so many people. I've seen so many other sequels make that same mistake, and far, far more often than not it fails to pay off.

Ghost Trick is a fantastic game, but yeah I'd absolutely hate a direct sequel. A spiritual successor would be really great to see though, hopefully the remake sells enough that we might get it.

You can add me to the love fest. I blind played the game years ago, and I fell in love with the characters, story, and overall style.

I love Ghost Trick and I’m so happy about the remaster. I really hope more people play it this time.

From what I recall, they were originally 3D models, flattened to 2D sprites (since the DS's 3D capabilities are limited). The way those models were hand animated, and how well they looked on the small screen, is definitely one of the standouts of this game.

Ghost Trick is definitely one of the very few games I’ve felt a little bittersweet about finishing purely because of how much I enjoyed my time with it. It scratched that Newgrounds era Escape Room puzzle games itch that I used to spend long afternoons wiling away hours on.

Same! Ghost Trick is a masterpiece, and I too hope it finds a bigger audience.
