You can get an audio clip version from Portal. Anyways, glass houses there, Luna. You've been a stuck up elitist more times than Vice has. |

He's not wrong though. You WILL miss about 50% of the nuances in F/Z if you are unfamiliar with FSN. That's just fact.

I'm very glad the Fate gatekeepers exists. I would have missed out on the VN and the Zero LNs if it wasn't for them. Sure, it's elitism, but I would argue it's one that encourages you to experience the original works to stand on equal footing with those annoying elitists.

ahahahaha the fandom for a... certain idol series that I won't name... are like this.
Not as obviously, but passive aggressively, which can be worse. Casually bringing up things like, "Oh, remember that thing they tweeted three years ago?" like if you don't remember it, you have no right to call yourself a fan and like their music. Though... I think it's just people who are bitter that the anime had more BL suggestions than they want (since it's originally a more otome, x-reader sort of thing. Well... there's been ~4hrs of x-reader drama CD per character since the anime, so I think they're fine.) (btw x-reader drama CDs - situation CDs - are a really big thing in Japan now, but I think a lot of English fans still don't know them...) |

True, but thankfully F/Z is well polished enough that you can appreciate the story without prior knowledge of the preceding works. Kinda like how Nier:Automata can be enjoyed without knowing Nier, or jumping back Nier without knowing Drakengard. Although don't get me wrong I totally agree with Vice I mean how else are you supposed to truly understand the ramifications of *censored* and *censored*. Oh and don't even get me started on *mega censored* |

To be fair, the link between Nier and Drakengrad is weak as hell. |

I just realized something: How much did she spend on that gag? I don't just mean money, but time as well. She must have waited forever for this to happen, because this CAN'T be a spur of the moment joke. Or maybe I'm just over thinking things.

Pretty much this. Sure, you'll still get a pretty good experience, but we want people to have the full one. Fate/Zero was written assuming that you've read the original. |

And you'll miss like 90% of the nuances in Fate if you're not familiar with a huge variety of historical and mythological figures but maybe it's okay to just sit down and enjoy a flipping anime without studying for it first. Honestly, Zero is a pretty ideal prequel in that it's accessible for complete newcomers and veteran fans alike. You can go into it blind and enjoy it just as well (plus they devote the entire first episode to telling viewers how the Fate universe works anyway.) |

But that's the thing. You won't enjoy it "just as well" if you don't know the things about the Naruverse that you learned from FSN. Zero was made to be accessible without prior knowledge but there are things in it that you need to know of to truly appreciate it. Watching Kirei devolve into what you know he will become is far more interesting if you already KNOW what he will become, for example. No, you do not get the same level of understanding if you go into Zero blind. You just don't. |

You're right. I watched Zero first, then only later checked out the VN and the UBW TV series. It wasn't until I checked out those that I appreciated how much gold Zero managed to mine out of a mountain of crap But really, this is a pretty silly conversation to have. You're trying to quantify enjoyment of a cartoon and min/max how best to get the most Entertainment Points out of it. If somebody can understand a franchise entry without prerequisite then let em, and if they enjoy it use that as an in to suggest other entries. I love the Macross franchise to pieces but I'm not gonna try to dictate which version a person should watch first so long as it functions just fine on its own merits. |

People have always been like this about Fate Stay Night, yet there are other anime that people won't get without consuming other things, and no one acts like that for them. The one that always struck me was people reccing Ouran High School Host Club to new anime watchers, when Ouran is a genre parody that won't make sense without having seen other shows first. And yet, people used to rec it like that all the time, because it is a good show... If you understand the parody aspect.
