However, Hikaru is an awkward teen who doesn't necessarily know how to articulate his emotions or act on them while Rihito is more outgoing.

I think you mixed the names here...

I still think Loveless is under-rated. And even though it's only a one shot OVA adaptation of the manga I got to give a shout out to one of my high school intros to BL with Fake.

I think the Kono Danshi/ This Boy series deserves an honorable mention.

Also returning this week by popular demand is the reader poll

That's great! Wish I could participate in the poll, but Yuri on Ice is about the only qualifying anime I've seen so I probably shouldn't.

No "YOI isn't BL!1!1" comments, yet? People are getting soft...Wink

Anyhow, love that shows like Naruto and Berserk have been added, though i'm not sure if they will count in the end... Laughing

I would have added "Nabari no Ou" to the list of choices in the readers' poll, although Yoite, while he presents as male, is actually intersex, so whether NnO qualifies as as BL anime depends on how far you're willing to stretch the definition of BL to encompass self-defined gender. Along with No. 6, NoO remains a favorite of mine for having an extremely intense is-it-or-isn't-it? same-gender relationship between the two leads of an anime with a strong main plot that is outside the conventional BL tropeosphere. And the tone of its bittersweet, heart-rending ending is perfect.

No. 6 is mainly sci-fi, while NoO is basically a compelling hybrid of a shonen tournment anime and a high-voltage shoujo angst-fest. Both would be strong examples of those genres even if the BL elements were removed.

My first fascination with the genre came with Junjou Romantica. Oh sweet memories. But no matter what the favorite pairing will remain forever Shizuo and Izaya from Durarara. Yeah. You can sue me. You can judge me. But I have literally ZERO REGRETS! Cool

Yeah not a fan of healthy relationships, as heart warming as they can be, like in Given, they always end up a bit boring for me. And I think the reason that Yuri on Ice became so popular was because it never sold itself as BL so the pairing was unsure and it was just so satisfying when it came true. However, I hate Gravitation and Loveless and Super Lovers has honestly made me lose a certain amount of faith in humanity.

Honorable mentions to No. 6 and of course Banana Fish. Also Antique Bakery is heavily underrated. And shouldn't someone add Samurai Flamenco on the list?

Still need to watch Classmates... I hope it's good.

I love how the poll's back. I don't think you should let users add anime to the list. It tends to result in a lot of troll options.

I get that you want the monetization, and that's fine, but it's kinda weird to post a video you can't watch on your own site. Smile Might as well just put the link up.

Yay for the Return of the Poll!! And yes, we should be allowed to add titles. The trolls are easily ignored, unless they're funny enough that people want to vote for them or trollfriends stage a pointless raid. This topic might get trolled more than normal, but that's nothing new.

I agree that Antique Bakery is underrated. It's so sweet and funny, with a dash of drama for that all-important angst-factor.

Oh we all know what the REAL best BL anime is!

Sucks how the "oldest" show on this list, No. 6, is from 2011. Insert obligatory "X isn't a Boy Love because it came from shoujo magazine" or "its just a sports anime with gay protagonist" comment here.

I get that old school BL manga since the 1970s and 80s was mostly melodrama and covered off colored topics but can we please acknowledge that without Keiko Takemiya and the 80's manga artists we wouldn't even have modern day BL anime.

And I should add that 1992's "Ai no Kusabi" (the "Citizen Kane" of BL OVAs) recently got an upgraded fansub release from Orphan with vastly improved picture quality (DVD sources, compared to the original VHS fansubs from Lupin Gang Anime) and subs that were a somewhat cleaned up and edited version of the Lupin Gang originals (which in turn apparently had their genesis in a script from Jimaku Animation).

[EDIT: Fansub link removed ~Zalis]

Sekaiichi hatsukoi and no6 and this boy series would be on mine. Sarazanmai too I guess if were putting something like yuri on ice.

Wouldmt put yuri on ice on it. Seemed a but too creepy with the older viktor being pervy with yuri. Yuri x otobek should have been main ship.

Would have hitorijime my hero too on it. Liked that one.

Not the best, fantasy/sci-fi (and can forget it making a lot of sense) but also probably not well known at all: There's only a one episode OVA and is shounen-ai, which came out in 1990, 緑野原迷宮 Ryokunohara Meikyuu or Ryokunohara Labyrinth - Sparkling Phantom (ANN anime#4125)

Recommendation from president of local anime club only way I came to know of it (many years ago). Saw it on laser disc. Smile

The manga there's more volumes, but it's well out of print (so used bookstore only).

Kappei Yamaguchi and Seki Toshihiko voice the two main characters, so I was hooked to watch it even if I couldn't understand much.
