Wait, so that's why you can't buy Hatoful Boyfriend on Playstation anymore, because of Epic?? I, like many people, own a PS5 without having any actual PS5 games so like a year ago I had tried to buy Hatoful Boyfriend digitally only to see from my wishlist that it was unavailable.... I hope it comes back eventually bc I don't have a PC....

Oof, thanks for that! I had no idea. The column has been edited to reflect this.

There are a few more instances of misgendering. The subtitle of this section is “Hatoful Boyfriend Creator Claims Epic Hasn't Paid Him Royalties”.

The sixth paragraph that begins “So yeah, Mediatronic was hit by the massive layoffs at Epic.” uses he, he, him.

You caught everything else!

Tim Sweeny talks about how investments haven't panned out like he expected, yet it is people that had no say in those investments that lose their jobs to somehow make up for it. Fall Guys supposedly isn't seeing the growth that Epic wanted, so of course the thing to do is fire a bunch of people working on it and gut the morale of those left. Personally, I haven't touched the game since they switched over to needing an Epic account, even for my PS4 version that I first downloaded when the game first came out. I was all set to play it as a community game with a vtuber, sat through the update, only to be met with it requiring me to make an account. It annoyed me enough that I just gave up.

Fortnite is also apparently not doing as well and seeing employment changes. I don't know if it is dropping off, or if it's just another example of anything less than constant growth being seen as a failure.

The thing with Cait Sith is that the further you dig into it, the more you see that Square-Enix could have really gone either way, because they've always messed up the reference to the Gaelic creature.

First, the proper Gaelic spelling is apparently "cat-sìth" in singular, while in plural it's apparently "cait-shìth", so the FF7 character's name is a Frankenstein's monster combination of the plural spelling for the first half & the singular spelling for the second half. Not just that, but there's no accent over the i in "Sith", and while I don't know how Gaelic works, I do know that in languages where there are accents that usually indicates a longer stress on that vowel's pronunciation, so no including the accent in "Sith" would mean that it shouldn't even be pronounced "Shee", but rather "Shi", which could be a completely different word in Gaelic. Sure, this goes into nitpicking & pedantry a bit, but I'm just trying to be respectful towards the actual language, because Square never actually bothered to render the name correctly in the first place, whether it's because of a lack of accented i or the simple fact that it fused together both singular & plural spellings.

In that regard, "Cait Sith" probably isn't an actual word in Gaelic, so Square could pronounce it however it wants, because it's gibberish that came about by corrupting an actual Gaelic word, likely because the translator didn't know better. Considering that Square-Enix went through the trouble of re-spelling "Aeris" into "Aerith" long ago, but never bothered to fix "Cait Sith" into "Cat Sìth" (or "Cat Sith", "Cait Shith", etc.), then the company kind of brought all of this upon themselves.

They're the one genre that gets it worse than Japanese RPGs because at least Japanese RPGs can point to Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy for some degree of credit; plenty in the U.S. haven't quite clued in that Phoenix Wright is a visual novel.
I can't believe that you've forgotten the most successful dating sim franchise in the west: Fire Emblem.

I know it's mostly irrelevant, but this part of the sentence in the Hatoful Boyfriend section confuses me.

"...given Japanese pronunciation rules, the "H" is pronounced the same as "F.""

Where is this F pronunciation coming into play? Is It supposed to be "Fatoful?" I thought the pun was in pronunciation of the "a" sound: Hato for pigeon, Hāto for heart?

I've only ever dealt with the game through translation, so is there something in the Kanji/Katakana that explains that?

Sorry for the weird question, I'm just very confused and eager to fix that by learning.

I do always appreciate seeing Mega Man X: Command Mission and Advance Guardian Heroes represented, even when they don't quite make it onto mine. Not sure I'm actually capable of putting together an entirely honest top 25, especially without veering into "obscure unlocalized/indie title" and "eroge nobody even considered fan translating" territory. With that disclosure out of the way, here's a slightly dishonest attempt, in no particular order:

Parasite Eve
Final Fantasy IX (tied with V)
Dragon's Dogma
Ys SEVEN
Baten Kaitos Origins
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Prime 2
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
Tales of Innocence R
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
Kirby 64
White Knight Chronicles II
Rule of Rose
Tomb Raider: Legend
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Inazuma Eleven
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
MegaMan Zero Collection (DS) - I can't pick just one here
MegaMan Battle Network 2
MegaMan Star Force 3: Black Ace

Too-soon-to-tell Honorable Mentions:
Digimon Survive
Metroid Dread
Resident Evil VILLAGE
NieR Replicant ver. 1.22
Starfield

(This turned more into: pick my top out of a series with multiple strong contenders. Some entire series fell off because I couldn't pick just one and there isn't an easy collection.)

That confused me too. There was an ED for Gintama by SPYAIR called either "Some Like It Hot" or "Samurai Heart" due to the punny pronunciation peculiarities, so I thought Hatoful Boyfriend was doing something similar with "Heartful Boyfriend," but if F for H is the source of the pun (and hu/fu is a thing) then I guess I'd think the pun was "Fateful Boyfriend." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Still confused, obviously. Wink
