Aura Battler actually seems like something i may be interested in, since i liked Turn A Gundam, Robotech, and other cheesy classic anime. I've just been trying to hold off on blind purchases since i have so many shows in my backlog; i'll see if i can give the show a sample before making a final decision.
Those shelves are impressively packed! The owner must be a tetris master, lol. |

The best thing about this Blu Ray release is that its way cheaper than buying the last three ADV DVDs used off of Amazon. I think I saw vol. 13 going for $200.00 not too long ago.

Huh? The dub is 2.0 stereo. 
What perhaps your finding odd is that while technically its stereo, the sound effects & music are dual mono but the dub voices are actual stereo. Its similar to the new Sailor Moon dub as well. The upmixing process of your receiver will have the music & sound effects in the center only because it has no way of taking the dual mono channels are expanding them but since the voices are stereo the upmixing will expand that. |

The review said this has a 7.1 audio mix. Is this correct? I’ve never heard of Sentai doing a 7.1, and even 5.1 is fairly rare for them. Not to mention, the packaging lists 2.0 audio.

While Dunbine has obvious comparisons to Gundam because of Tomino, mentioning George RR Martin was a bit silly. GRRM was editing and writing a superhero anthology called Wild Cards during the 80s and had no influence on anything fantasy-based during that time. Tolkein, of course, but you should have mentioned actual contemporary fantasy authors of the time like R.A. Salvatore or Weis & Hickman.
I stopped reading the review shortly after that part, but was it ever mentioned that Dunbine was basically the start of the Isekei genre, just as Tomino's Gundam seperated mecha anime into super robot and real robot genres? |

I think the reviewer was referring to elements that appear in GRRM's novels, like complex international fantasy politics, rather than claiming Dunbine took direct inspiration from his stuff.
I think this is debatable, but an interesting discussion. "Other World" stories can be traced back to classic anime like Dunbine and Fushigi Yugi, and even further back to stories like "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court", or even "Princess of Mars". From what i know, what popularized the modern "isekai" story as we know it is Mushoku Tensei (otaku fantasy, video-game mechanics, etc.) I'd really love to see someone dive into the history of this type of story, and see how it's changed (or stayed the same) over time. |

For the early 80's, I'd say David Eddings, Stephen R. Donaldson, or Michael Moorcock would be more appropriate alternate choices than GRRM. Salvatore, Weis, & Hickman really didn't get going until TSR started their Dragonlance and Forgotten Worlds novels in the late 80s. And the only thing GRRM about Dunbine is spoiler[everybody dies. They don't call him "kill 'em all Tomino" for nothing.].
Nope, and good point. Dunbine was really the first show where all the classic elements of Isekai came together. |

Agreed. I have the first 10 I got in a bundle from RightStuf, not realizing that the last two were printed in such small numbers that I'd never be able to get it for a reasonable price. I'm glad I can now finally own the whole thing! |

Mmm... even on Shousetsuka ni Narou, isekai stories were quite popular well before the debut of Mushoku Tensei in November 2012. Heck, Re:Zero predates it by seven months, and that's very clearly riffing on an established pattern. Knight's & Magic, a reincarnation fantasy story like Mushoku Tensei, dates to October 2010. On the eve of Re:Zero's debut, most of the top stories on the site were isekai stories; one of them, Log Horizon, had five volumes in print; and the VRMMO branch of the genre was about to hit the anime world in a few months with Sword Art Online.

Yeah, I'm well aware that the GoT books didn't come around until the 90s. I was just making a point of comparison that modern TV audiences might immediately understand, given how popular the franchise is today.
This is true; the audio channel is in fact 2.0, and the mention of a 7.1 mix was an error on my part. Thank you for pointing that out! The audio issues I was having were limited to just hardware/software issues on my end. My apologies for the goof; the article is going to be updated ASAP to fix mistake. |

I hear ya on that last volume's price. I had an extreme bit of luck finding both of the ADV sets that came in the chipboard boxes complete at a used media store. They were $35 for each half and I could hardly pounce on them fast enough. I hadn't seen the boxed set for the second set since the days of Suncoast and some of the volumes hadn't even been opened yet. I'm still excited about that find.

Well, those who are collectors will definitely want it. We're slowly getting requests at the college where I work for some classic anime. We got a request for GoShogun. I was surprised because I had just put this on my list of things to get. While waiting to be ordered a student made a request for it.
Never saw Dunbine but again it's one of those mecha works that collectors will want if and when 'Heavy Metal L-Gaim' ever gets released. I'm sure that's on Discotek's list of things to do. That's pretty much all I can say about this series. The good thing is that there is a market for this material and people want it. Aura Battler Dunbine on BD? Oh HELL YES!! |
